The Mary Heath Foundation awarded the Oblong Fire Department $12,150 for replacement of all the departments radio pagers. This grant will assist the department to provide necessary equipment needed to serve the citizens of the district.
The Oblong Fire Department with MABAS Division 59 assisted Lawrence County by responding with tanker trucks to haul water for the county when there water system was broken during the flooding.

The department has a
ongoing Toys for Tots program. This past year the
department provided for 70 children. The primary source of income for
this program is the pork burger stand that the department operates at
the yearly Oblong Antique Tractor & Engine Show.
The county has recently
enacted a automatic mutual aid agreement. When
ever a structure fire is reported in the jusrisdiction of a county
department, the closest to the responding department is also alerted
and dispatched. This is especially helpful in the daytime hours when so
many of the members of the county departments are at work.
